As someone who wanted to experience Ayurveda and Panchkarma first hand, I reached the Kerala Ayurvedic healing village with excitement, curiosity and a bit of intimidation. The beautiful surroundings, peaceful, calm and energy shift rippled through my senses and made me realise that it is not just the physical take away of Panchkarma that I will be going with, and here I am sharing my Panchakarma experience honest review.
Panchakarma day by day
Day 1 – Arrival with curiosity and expectations
The first day is usually a relaxed defocusing on consultation so unlike modern medicines the doctors not only ask about the symptoms but the address. The lifestyle related activities such as how I slept , what cravings I have, when I feel tired, do I feel energetic post my meals or my sleep proteins and what are the triggers that stress me out . So, I understood that this was not any normal consultation but it was an ayurveda mapping. Needless to say that right from the first day the resistance began, as I was offered a simple meal without fried items caffeine or sugar.
Day 2 – The slowing down phase
By the second day itself, the body enters the slowing down phase. This is the time when the treatments like Abhyangam begins. You start feeling the conscious engagement of your body, breath and mind and your energy levels start shifting from stress to relief. By the end of the day you feel relaxed and with the awareness that everything is slowing down.
Day 3 – Fatigue and emotional release
The third day is when the fatigue from missing your normal diet or your caffeine, cravings or energy dips or impatience starts showing up and you start having second thoughts about your decision to come for the Panchkarma experience.
But it is important to understand that this was not meant to be a spa or detox drink cleanse. It is meant to be a clinical and structured ayurvedic detox treatment. Feeling these emotions is absolutely normal.
Day 4 – 5 Healing crisis
By the 4th or the 5th day of treatment is when the healing crisis hits. This is the part that most Retreats and Ayurvedic clinics often don’t mention in detail. Even though everything is going right and you are following all routines and protocols, you will still feel irritated, tired, heavy and very raw with your emotions. This is the phase when your old symptoms could also resurface. But don’t worry, it is meant to be this way .The coming up of such emotions and fatigue is a positive sign and it is the body’s way of processing the deep seated toxins from the body.
The dietary challenges
One of the tricky aspects about the panchakarma treatment is the dietary challenges. So unlike the non ayurvedic routines, the meals offered at the retreat will be very simple, warm, light and meant to be therapeutic for the body.
Streamed vegetables, herb infused drinks, light soups etc are provided. Sugar, caffeine, deep fried items, snacks; these things are kept away.
In terms of whether or not you can use your social media and check Instagram Is another major question. So technically yes you can, but the retreats encourage you to reduce your screen time and also minimise stimulations.
This is because the body is undergoing Detox and the detox affects you both physically as well as mentally. Therefore, minimising your screen time will actually be supportive.
Day 6 – Acceptance hits
By the 6th day, the acceptance hits and you start sensing the shift. You no longer are resisting the changes but are simply accepting that it is a part of the process. As a result you start waking up feeling light and active and your sleep quality also improves. Your body starts feeling light and everything starts feeling better.
Day 7 – Fading of resistance
The 7th day is perhaps going to be the best entry in my Ayurveda cleanse diary
The reason being that the past six days and all the resistance and discomfort as well as the healing crisis starts making sense. By this time not only did my body become receptive to all the treatments I undertook and all the dietary modifications that were offered to me. But also that I started enjoying the simplicity of the ayurvedic way of life and how personalizations made my body and mind responsive.
What does Panchakarma feel like?
Abhyangam
The Abhyangam treatment is a full body oil massage that was offered in the initial phase of the treatment. Basically, it is a preparatory treatment for the main part of Panchkarma. So, gently warmed herbal oils are massaged over my body in circular strokes. Not only was the experience relaxing and pain relieving, but it was also emotionally calming and restoring.
Shirodhara
The Shirodhara experience was truly transformative. The sensation of the oil touching the forehead was not only relaxing but truly therapeutic. In the moment I lost all worries. No amount of work deadlines, mental noise or my social commitments mattered to me anyway. My thoughts began to slow down and I felt a sense of calm that I wish to keep getting back to.
Actual outcomes
The actual outcome of the Panchkarma is very different from what is marketed. It is to be noted that Panchakarma is neither a quick-fix solution and a relaxing vacation, nor a one time solution. It is detox and a reset process works holistically only when you are committed and you participate with full intention.
What do the clinics don’t warn you about?
Often the Ayurvedic clinics and retreat centres do not warn the patients about the fact that the entire Panchakarma experience can be uncomfortable and that it requires discipline and active participation from the end of the patients.
The feeling of discomfort and giving up is quite strong in the initial phase of the treatment but this is where you need to hold on to it and make sure that you follow it till the very end to experience the therapy you came looking for.
