As an Ayurvedic doctor, one of the most common yet important questions in Ayurveda that patients ask me at the wellness retreats is – “Doctor will this actually work”?

This question is something I hear very frequently at The – Kairali Ayurvedic healing Village. This not only shows the common concern of people visiting from various parts of the world to seek sustainable healthcare solutions. But also to the fact that most of the patients that I come across have already tried a lot of other solutions including modern medicine, laser therapies, physiotherapies etc which have not given them the desired results.

So when they come to our treatment centres, it is not just a question about Ayurveda vs modern medicine. It is very obvious for them to be curious and sceptical.

The question whether a certain treatment in Ayurveda will really be able to deliver the desired results is something that reflects a deeper concern –  Can ayurveda really compete with modern medicine?

To be honest, my answer is mostly yes. Because I believe Ayurveda is not a wellness system that is to be compared with modern medicine. One thing I try to maintain with my patients is honesty and transparency regarding the treatments that I’m recommending them and on what scale will the lifestyle corrective measures be able to affect them.

So, the underlying question remains – Whether Ayurveda can compare with modern medicine? To be honest, it was never meant to be compared.  Any Ayurvedic doctor opinion will be that both these systems have unique structures and designs that can beautifully complement each other by addressing different segments of healing and health. And can elevate the recovery and well being of the patient.

Why does Ayurveda remain relevant today?

Ayurveda has proved its mettle in the wellness industry. It has not only survived centuries but also been preserved through generations and its classical traditions are still being followed till date.

The fact is that evidence-based Ayurveda,  not only helps in disease prevention, but is also effective to work in collaboration with modern medicine.

Where Ayurveda excels

Chronic conditions

Can Ayurveda cure chronic disease ?  A definite yes. Chronic conditions like digestive problems, migraines, metabolic aggravations and arthritis are longstanding issues, and these often take years to develop.

Generally, these issues are a result of consistent damage to lifestyle related factors such as diet, nutrition and environment related factors. The reason that Ayurveda excels in this department is because its approach is unique.

It not just focuses on preventing diseases and offering relief. But rather in understanding the main causes of these issues and trying to fix them internally by bringing balance in the doshas of the body that is Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Prevention

Ayurveda’s power lies in its sustainable and preventive approach. It’s holistic treatments, personalized recommendations and detoxification treatments help one to prevent diseases as a result of staying fit in general.

Lifestyle disease

Ayurveda not only cures diseases, but its treatments, lifestyle corrective measures along with herbal supplements and dietary modifications allow one to stay fit and altogether prevent diseases.

Modern day problems like insomnia, stress, digestive issues, anxiety etc are closely related to our everyday habits which have been tampered through our poor lifestyle.

So ayurveda through its effective techniques such as Dinacharya that is daily routine, Rituacharya – seasonal routine, Ahara-diet etc helps the person to develop overall healthy habits that will help him to live a healthy and happy life.

Mental health

Is Ayurveda scientific ? Well the fact that Ayurveda in addition to offering relief in physical issues also caters to mental health is proof that Ayurveda is not only scientific but also holistic in its approach.

Today, mental and emotional well being is one of the major concerns given today’s lifestyle. So stress, depression, anxiety, mental burnout etc are common concerns.

Ayurveda recognises the importance of mental health and also offers solutions that will directly impact one’s state of mind by fixing issues like poor digestion, insomnia and overall well being.

Where it defers to allopathy

Acute infection

Although Ayurveda has its many benefits, it is important to address it in a transparent manner. Therefore, understanding where Ayurveda falls short will help us substitute with allopathy.

Now issues such as acute infections cannot be expertly handled by Ayurveda. The reason being that conditions like acute infections require care and immediate relief.

The antibiotics or antiviral medicines and vaccines will have a better result in reducing the effects of the infectious diseases.

Sometimes, if such issues are not controlled they can become life threatening. So instead of choosing ayurveda which would act as supporting treatment and would boost immunity in the long run. It is always recommended to combat acute infections through Modern medicine.

Surgery

Surgery also known as Shalya tantra in Ayurveda has been mentioned in texts like the Sushrut Samhita which has a mention of detailed surgical procedures. Yet, the modern day surgical treatments are much more advanced. It has better diagnostic technologies and emergency surgical teams who can offer their expert diagnosis along with life support systems to offer instant relief.

Therefore, Ayurveda can be followed as a means to avoid surgeries or to boost recovery post the surgery phase. But in conditions where immediate surgery is required, Ayurveda will defer.

Emergency medicine

In emergency medicines, allopathy definitely excels. Imagine a patient who is undergoing a heart attack or a serious seizure. For him, the modern hospitals will work best who will have the emergency surgical teams to respond quickly to critical situations whereas.

Ayurveda on the other hand will focus on long term healing and gradual recovery that can be performed post these emergencies.

Case examples from Healing Village

At Kairali – The Ayurvedic Healing Village we come across many patients who usually come with a lot of doubts regarding whether the treatments they are signing up for will be able to deliver the promised benefits or not.

Most of the time the people who come to us come as a last resort who have tried everything. Or they’ve heard excellent reviews from other people so they want to try it out for themselves.

For instance, there was a patient once who wanted to enroll in a panchkarma treatment for his chronic digestive problems that he had been facing for a long period of time.

So, we began his treatment by referring him to a Kairali doctor consultation. The doctor did a detailed analysis of his body’s constitution, that is his prakriti. His imbalances –  vikruti’s and aggravations of the three doshas were identified.

After thoroughly analyzing his dietary habits and day to day routine, we offered him a customized version of Panchkarma treatment that would suit him the best.

As a result, through a personalized panchakarma treatment along with the support of herbal supplements and lifestyle corrective measures, the patient was able to experience definite improvements in digestive health. In addition to this, he also reported feeling healthier and lighter.

Conclusion: Integrative medicine is the future

Now that we have understood both the pros and cons of Ayurvedic wellness, it is important to understand that wherever Ayurveda lags behind, can be acknowledged through Allopathy.

So, it is not just a question of traditional vs modern medicine India. But it is about how to pair them efficiently so that they can offer therapeutic benefits to the concerned patients. Therefore, going for an integrative approach that includes the best of both Ayurveda as well as modern medicine to offer the best treatments is the most recommended way to go about things.
