When I arrived at the Kairali – The Ayurvedic Healing Village, I came with a body that wanted attention, healing and definitely some transformation. I had not just come for a Ayurveda holiday India, but I came with expectations and a willingness to transform not just physically, but mentally. My sleep cycles were irregular, appetite poor, the digestion unsatisfactory and most importantly, stress had become a norm of my everyday routine. I knew about the Panchkarma detox from before. But I never thought, I would actually consider seeking a Panchakarma retreat experience India. The moment I stepped into the serene expanse of the retreat, I felt a certain shift in my energy levels and couldn’t help but notice how my body instantly fell at ease.
Day 1 – Arrival, Prakriti assessment, first consultation
I had heard a ton of positive Kairali – The Ayurvedic Healing Village review. But it was only after I came myself that I could see why it’s so popular.
One of the first things that caught my attention was the serene calm and peace at the authentic Panchakarma retreat. There was no space or need for notifications. The constant addiction to the phone or the sudden urgency about work or deadlines; everything seemed to be muted. Things were moving at its perfect pace. At this Kerala wellness retreat, the sound of nature, birds and the rustling of leaves instead took the main stage.
After I was checked in, I was led to my diagnosis with an Ayurvedic vaidya. I found the consultation very unique. Unlike my consultations in Allopathy, I was simply asked about my symptoms, patterns and how I slept? What food cravings I had? What would trigger my stress levels? And how would my digestion look usually?
Basically, I was told that the Vaidya is assessing my prakriti, that is my body constitution which apparently is unique and how the doshas of the body – Vata Pitta and Kapha determine our overall constitution.
So, any disease or discomfort that we experience is a result of the imbalance of these doshas. By the end of the consultation, I was given a customized plan that was uniquely suited for my patterns. Therefore specific treatments, dietary modifications and everyday routine was recommended that would suit me in the best manner.
Day 2-3 – Beginning of the treatments
The treatments began right from the next morning with the Ayurveda detox week. So one of the first treatments that I experienced was –
Abhyangam a full body oil massage
Basically two therapists worked in perfect coordination. They applied comfortably warm herbal oils across my entire body in rhythmic strokes and appropriate amount of pressure to relieve me of cramps, body pain and entirely relax my senses.
The experience was not only relaxing but meditative. As time passed, I noticed that not only did my limbs and other body parts start to calm down but my mind became peaceful and my breath started slowing down as a response. So, the experience was not just physical but it was rather neurological.
Later, I went for the Shirodhara experience. In this therapy, warm herbal oil was poured over my forehead in a continuous stream. Obviously, this was something that I was experiencing for the first time.
I noticed that the feeling of a warm liquid pouring down my forehead, eyebrows and towards my head induced a sudden calm. My mind started focusing on the pour rather than the otherwise disturbing mental chatter I struggled with. The session was so beautiful and transformational that my thoughts instantly relaxed and I felt peaceful.
By the third day, I was prepared and looking forward to the rhythm that had been set in at the retreat. So my mornings would begin by waking up early with the sun. Post which I would be offered herbal drinks that were prepared as per my dosha.
Then some light movement, yoga and breath work techniques were done post which treatments and light meals were given to us. One thing I noticed was that the food that we were provided at the retreat was not only light and refreshing, but it was therapeutic. It felt like I was feeding on meaningful nutrients to replenish my body as well as my soul.
Day 4 – 5 – The “crisis point”
Now you must think that if the treatments are going so well and if the routine feels so peaceful then why would anyone experience a crisis point. But by the 4th or the 5th day there is a possibility that things can get uncomfortable.
Even though the treatments, the routine, the diet, everything feels extremely transformative at first. You may start feeling uncomfortable and slightly incompatible with the routine by the 4th day. Reading about Panchakarma what to expect is one thing, but experiencing it is an altogether different thing.
This is because the treatments and authentic Panchakarma retreat allow the toxins to loosen up and you will feel a short phase of discomfort. It is obviously not relaxing or comfortable, but it is real. This is the phase where you have to hold yourself and believe that it is a part of the process.
Feeling tired, having mood fluctuations, feeling some old aches to resurface and your mind feeling restless post the routine is all possible and very much there. But believe me it’s a phase that will pass and once you are out of the tunnel you will truly feel the long lasting impact of the treatment and routine you underwent.
Day 6-7 – Transformation — what shifts physically and mentally
It is by the end of the first week that you will start feeling subtle changes. Post a week when you get used to the routine, the efficiency of the treatments start feeling normal to your body.
You will see subtle significant changes. You will start waking up feeling light. Your digestion will feel on point. Your mind will become clear and your body will feel less tense. By the first week you will see improvement in your sleep levels. Improvement in the way you manage and regulate your emotions as well as your stress triggers. Most importantly, the heaviness that you carried while entering the retreat will have gone by then.
Conversation with a Kairali physician
Before leaving the retreat I had my final consultation with one of the Vaidyas at the Kairali Retreat Centres. So in my conversation about usual misunderstandings about Panchkarma, he replied –“Often people think that Panchkarma is only about detoxification. But it is actually a holistic treatment that addresses removing deep seated toxins from the body as well as offering a reset to the mind. It is only when one’s digestion improves that their gut becomes healthy and as a result they start feeling clarity – physically, mentally and emotionally.”
