Kairali – The Ayurvedic Healing Village in Palakkad, Kerala, was nominated in the India’s Leading Resort category at the World Travel Awards 2009.
Previously known as Kairali Ayurvedic Resort, the property was developed around a model in which Ayurveda formed the foundation of the residential experience rather than functioning simply as an additional wellness service.
The World Travel Awards recognise organisations and destinations across the international travel and tourism sector. For an Ayurveda-focused property, nomination in a mainstream resort category also reflected the growing visibility of Ayurveda within India’s wider wellness and hospitality landscape.
More Than a Conventional Resort
The change from Kairali Ayurvedic Resort to Kairali – The Ayurvedic Healing Village represented more than a change in name.
The property’s focus was increasingly centred on structured Ayurvedic care, practitioner supervision and residential programmes designed around the principles of Ayurveda.
This distinction is important because an Ayurvedic healing centre operates differently from a conventional leisure resort. The experience may include practitioner consultations, individually planned therapies, dietary guidance, daily routines and rest as part of a coordinated programme.
In this model, accommodation and hospitality support the Ayurvedic programme rather than defining the experience by themselves.
Ayurveda Within the Wider Travel Landscape
The 2009 nomination also came at a time when wellness travel was becoming more visible internationally.
Ayurveda had long been associated with Kerala, but its presentation within the travel sector was changing. Travellers were increasingly encountering Ayurveda through residential centres where traditional therapies, food, yoga, rest and practitioner-led guidance could be experienced together over a longer stay.
Kairali’s nomination in the India’s Leading Resort category placed this type of Ayurveda-led hospitality within a broader travel and tourism context.

A Recognition in Kairali’s Early Development
The World Travel Awards nomination in 2009 forms part of Kairali – The Ayurvedic Healing Village’s earlier history as an Ayurveda-focused destination in Kerala.
Today, Kairali – The Ayurvedic Healing Village operates as an NABH-accredited Ayurvedic hospital and holds the Government of Kerala’s Green Leaf Certification.
Its development reflects a model that continues to distinguish between general wellness hospitality and structured, practitioner-led Ayurvedic care: the resort setting provides the environment, while Ayurveda remains the central framework.
