It helps in boosting the quality of sleep, nourishing the body, supporting the flow of life energy force- Prana and fostering mental quality and promoting calmness.
Step-by-step Kairali Abhyangam method
1. Selection of the oil
Choosing the right oil is perhaps sort of the most important aspect of Abhyangam that decides the efficiency level of the treatment. When you pick an oil that is based on your specific body requirements and dosha types, then you will not only be able to relax better but also be able to elevate the therapeutic benefits of the entire treatment. So choosing the right oil becomes very important.
For instance, if you are someone who has a Vata body type, that means you experience dry skin, you feel cold and you have a tendency to get anxious, you would need a Vata calming massage.
If you are Pitta body type that means your body is sensitive to heat and you experience acne inflammations and mood swings then going with oils that are infused with cooling herbs or the Pinda thailam will help you in cooling your body and clearing up your skin as well as reducing inflammation.
If you are a Kapha body type that is heavy bodied and you feel lethargic, then choosing light and stimulating oils will be effective in detoxifying as well as boosting your energy levels.
2. Activating the ingredients
The next step involves preparing the oil by activating the ingredients. Basically, this requires gently heating the oil. Gently heating means making it lukewarm and not boiling hot. So the idea of warming the oil should be by using a double boiler method.
This method not only gently heats the oil but also prevents burning the ingredients and the herbs. It is important to warm the oil as the ingredients get charged up. The warm oil penetrates deeply in the skin and nourishes the tissues better alongside being easily absorbed and boosting pain relief and relaxation.
3. Application process
The application process is perhaps one of the core aspects of the entire Abhyangam treatment. So it is important to apply the oil in the right sequence. It is recommended to start messaging oil on the body from the outer ends towards the heart, that is from the tips of the fingers towards the chest area, from the toes towards the knees and then the upper body. It is to be taken care that when you are massaging the head area, then you need to use circular motions.
When you are massaging the face, then you need to use light strokes and be careful especially around the eyes.
When you are massaging the limbs, then long strokes are required. Over the joints circular motions would be recommended. When you are massaging the abdomen, then clockwise circular motion is recommended so that it supports digestion. And when you are applying it on your chest and back then broad strokes with firm would work best.
4. Time duration of the massage
Ideally the time duration of your massage should be anywhere between 20 to 30 minutes. It is important to understand that being consistent with your massage even for 15 minutes everyday will be more beneficial rather than performing a one hour massage once in 6 months.
Post the massage you should allow the oil to absorb for at least 20 minutes. This is the time when you can consciously unwind and relax. You can engage in candle gazing meditation or simply sit back and practice pranayama or enjoy decent classical music, anything that allows your system to relax and absorb the benefits of the treatment.
5. Follow-up with a warm bath
It is suggested to follow the treatment with a warm bath. This is so because the warm water will allow you to get rid of the oiliness of the oils. At the same time it boosts absorption without stripping away the moisture of the skin.
How to do self-oil massage correctly
Oil temperature
When it comes to self oil massage people usually tend to ignore the heating part of the preparation. Well, gently warming your oil will hardly take about a minute and the warm oil accelerates the and benefits of the treatment.
Direction of strokes
The direction of the strokes is an important aspect of the application process. It is to be kept in mind that when you’re starting the massage, the flow of the blood should be from the limbs towards your heart.
So, you should always start from the extremities, then gently move towards the center part of the body. While you are massaging the limbs, then the stroke should be long, but while you are performing it on the joints then the strokes should be circular.
Timing
It is best to practice the massage in the morning hours before the bath, especially under the sun. You can also engage in oil massage before sleeping to unwind and foster stress relief.
