Navel oiling may feel warm and soothing. However, there is not enough evidence to show that it directly treats bloating, abdominal pain or menstrual cramps.
Navel oiling is becoming popular again.
The practice involves placing a small amount of warm oil in or around the belly button. The area is then massaged gently.
It is often promoted as a remedy for bloating, constipation, cramps and poor digestion.
Some people also claim that the navel is linked to many organs and that oil can travel through it into the body.
There is no clear scientific evidence for this claim.
The navel is the scar left after the umbilical cord falls away. In adults, it is not an open pathway to the stomach, bowel or uterus.
Still, navel oiling may have some value as a calming self-care practice.
What is navel oiling?
Navel oiling means applying oil to the belly button and the skin around it.
Common oils include sesame oil, coconut oil and castor oil. Some Ayurvedic medicated oils are also used under professional guidance.
The practice is sometimes called nābhi cikitsā. The word nābhi means navel.
However, the way navel oiling is used today is not always the same as a formal Ayurvedic treatment.
The type of oil, the massage method and the reason for using it can all vary.
Can navel oiling reduce bloating?
There is not enough research to prove that oil placed in the navel reduces bloating.
Bloating can have many causes. These include gas, constipation, food intolerance, indigestion, hormonal changes and irritable bowel syndrome.
A gentle abdominal massage may help some people feel more comfortable.
The possible benefit may come from:
- Warmth
- Gentle pressure
- Relaxed muscles
- Slow breathing
- Rest
This is different from saying that oil is absorbed through the navel and reaches the digestive organs.
That claim has not been proven.
What does Ayurveda say?
Ayurveda often links gas, dryness, irregular bowel movements and abdominal tightness with increased vāta doṣa.
Vāta is the Ayurvedic principle linked with movement.
Warm oil, regular meals, rest and gentle massage are often used in vāta-calming care.
This may explain why abdominal oiling feels helpful to some people.
But Ayurveda does not say that every case of bloating has the same cause.
Bloating with fever, diarrhoea, vomiting or severe pain needs medical attention.
Can it help with pain?
Navel oiling has not been proven to treat abdominal pain or menstrual cramps.
Warmth and massage may give temporary comfort. They may help relax tense abdominal muscles.
But pain can have many causes.
It may be linked with gas or constipation. It may also be caused by infection, gallbladder problems, ulcers, appendicitis or gynaecological conditions.
For this reason, repeated or severe pain should not be managed only with home remedies.
Does it improve nutrient absorption?
There is no evidence that navel oiling improves the absorption of nutrients.
Most nutrients are absorbed through the digestive system, especially the small intestine.
Applying oil to the skin does not improve this process.
Some medicines are designed to pass through the skin. Ordinary oils are not designed in the same way.
Does navel oiling detoxify the body?
There is no good evidence that navel oiling removes toxins from the body.
The liver, kidneys, lungs and digestive system already help the body process and remove waste.
Oil treatments may be used as part of supervised Ayurvedic care. But this does not mean a few drops of oil in the navel can detoxify the body.
Is navel oiling safe?
For many healthy adults, applying a small amount of a familiar oil to healthy skin is likely to be low risk.
However, it should be avoided if there is:
- Broken skin
- Redness or swelling
- Discharge from the navel
- A recent abdominal operation
- An unhealed piercing
- A painful lump or hernia
- A known allergy to the oil
Essential oils should not be applied directly without proper dilution.
Pregnant people, children and those recovering from surgery should seek professional advice before using abdominal massage or medicated oils.
When should you see a doctor?
Seek medical advice if bloating or pain:
- Keeps returning
- Becomes severe
- Comes with fever
- Causes repeated vomiting
- Is linked with weight loss
- Occurs with blood in the stool
- Comes with jaundice
- Prevents passing stool or gas
Sudden or severe abdominal pain needs urgent medical care.
Navel oiling in Ayurvedic care
At a supervised Ayurvedic centre, abdominal oiling may be used as part of a wider treatment plan.
The physician may consider digestion, bowel habits, sleep, stress, medical history and present symptoms before choosing a therapy.
At Kairali – The Ayurvedic Healing Village in Palakkad, care is physician-led within an NABH-accredited Ayurvedic hospital setting.
This means treatment is selected after assessment. Navel oiling is not offered as a cure for every case of bloating or pain.
The practical answer
Navel oiling may feel warm, calming and comforting.
Gentle abdominal massage may help some people relax. It may also reduce a feeling of tightness.
But there is not enough evidence to say that oil placed in the navel directly treats bloating, pain, constipation or poor digestion.
It is best seen as a comfort practice, not a proven medical treatment.
Persistent or severe symptoms should always be assessed by a qualified healthcare professional.
