Artificial intelligence is becoming part of healthcare administration, clinical documentation and professional education. Ayurveda is beginning to encounter the same possibilities, along with the same questions.

How should an AI system handle a medical tradition built around individual assessment? Where can technology assist a practitioner without replacing clinical judgement? How should patient information be protected?

Kairali Ayurvedic Group began exploring these questions through KAAI, an artificial intelligence application announced in July 2024. Its digital assistant, Aarika, was introduced as a support tool for Ayurvedic practitioners.

The purpose was not to automate Ayurveda. It was to examine whether AI could help practitioners organise information, maintain case records and access relevant Ayurvedic knowledge more efficiently.

What is Aarika?

Aarika was developed as an AI-powered assistant for Ayurvedic vaidyas (physicians) and practitioners.

According to Kairali’s launch announcement, the application draws on material associated with classical Ayurvedic texts, including the Caraka Saṃhitā and Suśruta Saṃhitā, alongside modern research inputs.

The system was designed to assist with practitioner workflows such as case documentation, follow-up management and access to structured information.

It was also described as capable of generating diagnostic and treatment suggestions from information entered by practitioners. These suggestions were intended to support professional review, not to function as independent clinical decisions.

That distinction is essential.

Ayurvedic assessment depends on more than a list of symptoms. A qualified practitioner may consider medical history, constitution, current imbalance, digestive capacity, sleep, appetite, medications, physical examination and the progression of symptoms.

An AI system can organise submitted information. It cannot assume the responsibility of the practitioner interpreting it.

Why Ayurveda needs careful digital tools

Ayurvedic consultations can generate a substantial amount of information.

A practitioner may record the patient’s current concerns, previous diagnoses, medication use, diet, daily routine, digestive patterns, sleep and relevant clinical observations. Recommendations may then include food, lifestyle changes, supervised therapies and follow-up reviews.

Managing this information consistently can become difficult in a busy practice.

A carefully designed digital system may help practitioners:

  • create and maintain structured case records;
  • document treatment plans and revisions;
  • organise follow-up information;
  • retrieve relevant educational material;
  • manage routine administrative work.

The benefit is not that technology knows the patient better than the physician. It is that better-organised information may allow the physician to review a case more clearly.

The proposed functions of Aarika

Kairali’s July 2024 announcement identified several intended areas of support.

Clinical information support

Aarika was designed to analyse information entered by a practitioner and provide possible Ayurvedic interpretations and recommendations for professional consideration.

Such outputs require critical evaluation. They should not be treated as confirmed diagnoses or automatically applied treatment plans.

Case management

The application was intended to support the creation and maintenance of detailed patient records, including consultation notes and treatment protocols.

Consistent documentation may be particularly useful when a programme involves repeated reviews or several stages of supervised care.

Follow-up support

Aarika was also designed to assist practitioners in managing follow-ups and organising culturally relevant educational guidance for patients.

Any patient-facing information should remain general unless reviewed and approved by the treating practitioner.

Practice administration

The system included practice-management functions intended to reduce time spent on routine administrative tasks.

The exact available functions and integrations should be confirmed against the current version of the application before publication.

Adaptability

Kairali described Aarika as a system designed to accommodate different clinical scenarios rather than applying one standard response to every case.

In practice, meaningful adaptability depends on the quality of the information entered, the system’s design and the practitioner’s review.

AI suggestions are not medical decisions

The most important principle governing an application such as Aarika is practitioner oversight.

AI-generated output can contain errors, omit relevant context or reflect limitations in the material on which the system relies. A plausible answer is not necessarily a clinically appropriate answer.

For this reason, Aarika was introduced as an assistive application rather than a replacement for professional judgement.

Its recommendations should be reviewed in relation to:

  • the patient’s complete history;
  • current medication and conventional treatment;
  • contraindications;
  • age, strength and constitution;
  • the practitioner’s examination;
  • changes in symptoms over time.

No health-related decision should be based solely on an automated suggestion.

Privacy must be built into the system

Healthcare technology is also information technology.

If a digital assistant processes case records or patient details, privacy and security cannot be secondary features. They must shape how data is collected, stored, accessed and used.

Kairali’s announcement stated that Aarika was designed with measures intended to protect patient confidentiality. Before publishing detailed claims about security, the current safeguards, data-storage arrangements and access controls should be confirmed by the technical team.

Practitioners also remain responsible for following applicable consent, confidentiality and record-management requirements.

Bringing classical sources into a digital environment

One of the more complex aims of Aarika is to make Ayurvedic knowledge easier for practitioners to navigate.

Classical texts are not simple databases of symptoms and remedies. Their concepts depend on context, interpretation and relationships between multiple factors.

Digitising this knowledge therefore requires more than placing translated passages into a search system.

The quality of the output depends on questions such as:

  • Which editions and translations are used?
  • How are classical passages interpreted?
  • How is disagreement between sources handled?
  • How is modern research evaluated?
  • How frequently is the knowledge base reviewed?
  • Who provides Ayurvedic and clinical oversight?

These questions should remain visible as Aarika develops. A digital tool becomes more credible when it explains its sources and limitations rather than presenting every output with equal certainty.

Kairali’s approach to Ayurveda and technology

What responsible AI in Ayurveda should look like

The most useful AI systems in Ayurveda may not be those that make the strongest claims.

They may be the ones that maintain clear boundaries.

A responsible application should identify uncertainty, direct urgent concerns to qualified professionals and avoid presenting general guidance as personal treatment. It should make sources visible, protect confidential information and allow practitioners to question or reject its output.

It should also improve with documented feedback rather than quietly changing without professional oversight.

Aarika represents Kairali’s attempt to examine how AI might assist Ayurvedic practice while keeping trained practitioners at the centre of clinical decision-making.

The future of technology in Ayurveda will depend less on whether an application can produce an answer and more on whether that answer is transparent, reviewable and used responsibly.
