Holistic Medicines or
Allopathy?

Holistic or alternative medicine has been around from a very
long time- Ayurveda can be traced back to Vedas from 5000BC, the Unani system of
medicine owes its origin to Hippocrates from 460 BC and homeopathy owes its
origin to Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843).

But thee most prevalent form of treatment now is allopathy though
it -is the youngest of all the medicine
system.-Over the last century maximum research and development has
gone into allopathic form of treatment and it has grown immensely.

But today the situation is this
that just for safety and profits many doctors prescribe unnecessary tests. The cost
difference between branded and generic medicine is huge. The Health ministry
really needs to regulate the funds equally among different streams of medicine
to ensure development of all streams as it is being widely believed that the ?alternative
medicines
? are very effective in many ailments.

The need of the day is to combine a treatment method with-model hospitals offering-all inclusive services -from all
the avenues comprising Spa, Sauna, Panchkarma for toxin cleansing. Surgical
intervention should be last priority.

Holistic Medical Services vs Allopathy

The oldest system of treatment/cure had been ayurvedic traced back from
the Vedas, Susrutha / Charaka i.e. almost from 5000 BC. Unani system of
medicine owes its origin to Greek Philosopher Hippocrates 460-377 BC.
Homeopaths also claim that Hippocrates may have originated homeopathy around
400 BC, when he prescribed a small dose of mandrake root to treat mania,
knowing fully well that it produces mania in much larger doses.

However, the full-fledged system is in prevalence with Samuel Hahnemann
(1755-1843) giving homeopathy its name and expanded its principles in the late
18th century. Biochemic tissue salts also known as Schuessler Cell Salts or
mineral salts are homeopathic preparations.

In Focus

The controversial ideas they are based on were developed by German
doctor Wilhelm Heinrich Schuessler (CE 1821 to CE 1898) who believed the
deficiency of these mineral salts causes diseases and published the results of
his experiments in a German homeopathic journal in March 1873, leading to a
list of 12 Biochemic cell salts.

Allopathy is a method of treating disease with remedies that produce
effects different from those caused by the disease itself. The term ‘allopathy’
was invented by German physician Samuel Hahnemann … He conjoined allos
‘opposite’ and pathos ‘suffering’ as a referent to harsh medical practices of
his era which included bleeding, purging, vomiting and the administration of
highly toxic drugs.” One example, of an allopathic therapy would be
“using a laxative to relieve constipation.” This system is prevalent
since the time of Dutch physician and teacher Hermann Boerhaave (1668-1738).

Bach Flower Remedies were developed by Dr. Edward Bach, a Harley Street
doctor and well known Physician, Bacteriologist, Homeopath and Researcher in
the U.K.- Despite the success of his work
with orthodox medicine, he felt dissatisfied with the way doctors were expected
to concentrate on diseases and ignore the people who were suffering from them.

He was inspired by his work with homeopathy but wanted to find remedies
that would be purer and less reliant on the products of disease. So in 1930, he
gave up his lucrative Harley Street practice and left London, determined to
devote the rest of his life to a new system of medicine that he was sure could
be found in nature. The aromatherapy which was a part of ayurvedic system was
further developed by him.

From all the discussion so far, it is observed that the currently most
prevalent medicine system i.e. Allopathy is the youngest of all the medicine
system but the irony is that all other medicine systems are called ‘Alternative
Medicine’ systems.

Over the last century, highest research and development has been
witnessed in Allopathic system with development of new vaccines, antibiotics,
pain killers etc. Also, diagnostic and surgical techniques in this system has
seen unparalleled growth and development to the extent that test tube babies
and IVF techniques with huge success ratio are now possible. This has been possible
mainly due to availability of huge funds for this system and being the first
choice of toppers at undergraduate level.

This system has undoubtedly best diagnostic and surgical techniques to
the extent that even joints or internal organ replacement and mapping
techniques like ECG, EEG, EMG, MRI etc. are available, which provide insight to
determine root cause of problem for best treatment course of action. For fully
exploiting the diagnostic potential, a lot of further work needs to be done in
areas like EEG, EMG etc.

However, the healing or curing streams of medicine like Ayurveda,
Homeopathy, Bach flower or aromatherapy became alternative medicine over the
years due to lesser or practically non-availability of funds for R&D and
lesser talented students pursuing these streams. It is high time that
correction is carried out for providing holistic medical services to the masses
at large since the allopathic system has become rotten today.

Majority of doctors prescribe unnecessary tests for their own safety
and get kickbacks from the pathology labs. Moreover, the cost difference
between branded and generic medicine is huge since branded companies have to
pay heavily to the doctors for prescribing branded medicines. The Health
ministry needs to regulate the funds equally among different streams of
medicine to ensure development of all streams.

It is felt that the allopathic doctors should open up their minds and
model hospital should offer medical services from all the streams including
Spa, Sauna, Panchkarma for toxin cleansing. Surgical intervention should be
last priority. Many cases can be quoted wherein the patient’s complaint had
been worsened by allopathic doctors despite spending huge money at the same
time similar examples are available even in other streams. It is time for
doctors to introspect whether money is the only and everything and start
corrective action.
