Living an Active Life with Arthritis

of arthritis include painful joints, inflamed, swollen, tender joints that may
be warm to touch and stiffness of movement, which typically worsen with age.

Surrounding each joint of the
body there is protective capsule Cartilage – holding a lubricating fluid that
helps the joints to move smoothly without pain. When arthritis attacks the
body, cartilage gets damaged,
narrowed or lost by a degenerative
process or by inflammation making joint movement very painful.

Joints naturally degenerate with time and most
of the people over the age of 55 show some signs of arthritis. Fortunately ,
arthritis can be managed by a combination of medication , exercise, lifestyle
management, diet and in very rare cases surgery.

Arthritis : Not a Single Disease

Arthritis literary means joint
inflammation, but it is not a single disease. Arthritis refers to a group of
more than 100 rheumatic diseases and other conditions that can cause pain,
stiffness and swelling in the joints.

Any part of your body can
become inflamed or painful from
arthritis. Some rheumatic conditions cab result in debilitating , even life
threatening complications or may affect other parts of the body, like muscles,
internal organs and eyes. The two main types of arthritis are – osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis ,
both damage joints in different ways.

Osteoarthritis

This is a common type of
arthritis, and involves wear-and-tear damage to the joint’s cartilage. when the
disease is left untreated it may result
in bone grinding directly on bone, which causes extreme pain and limited
movement. This wear and tear takes many years but can be sometimes accelerated
by a joint injury or infection.

Rheumatoid arthritis

In rheumatoid arthritis, the
body’s immune system attacks the lining of the joint capsule, a tough membrane
that encloses all the joint parts. This lining, known as the synovial membrane,
becomes inflamed and swollen. The disease process can eventually destroy
cartilage and bone within the joint and cause stiffness , extreme pain in
movement and loss of function of some bones.
